Money Matters! It isn’t just a true statement, it is also the name of a book by Master Financial Coach, Karen Beth Ford (karenford.org). According to Karen, money management need not be mystery or madness. No matter where you are, according to Karen, you can take control of your finances and start investing and saving. You don’t have to wait til you make six-figures or have a major windfall, you can start right now, right where you are.
Money management has always been my Achilles heel. Yet, I am getting better, using that tried and true financial management tool, a budget. According to Karen, budget doesn’t have to be a four-letter word. In fact, it could be the key to control. And the key to a workable budget is budgeting in at least some money for what matters to you.
Karen has had clients who changed their coffee drinking habits and saved $300 a month. A family of three went from spending $1,500 a month on food (mainly eating out) to spending just $500 a month on food. But the answer wasn’t complete austerity.
Her coffee drinking client went down to an expensive coffee just once a week. The family reduced their dinner out and brown bagged their lunches at work, using the work lunch as a weekly treat. What would you do with an extra $300 or even $1,000 a month?
