When you have been in the dating game as long as Karyn and Jean have, it does seem like a bit of a jungle. But instead of survival of the fittest Angeline Hart, one of the authors of Gorillas Make Great Lovers, it is more of a battle of the most familiar. Despite what we tell ourselves, we are prone to be attracted to what is most familiar to us. In her book and through coaching clients, Angeline has categorized 12 types of men (all with appropriate animal names). She teaches her clients how to recognize the various types and how to change the type she is attracted to.
Gorillas are great guys but maybe you prefer a sleek panther or a more academic owl. Whatever your type, he’s out there and Angeline helps clients navigate that jungle to find him. She also helps women recognize the good and bad guys, often immediately.
While she warns women to stay away from rats who refuse to take ownership of their own behaviors and overly critical crabs. But while these two animals represent some major red flags, she also helps us understand those behaviors. She says rats and crabs are often defense mechanisms that are often responses to unhappy and unhealthy childhood situations.
Knowing our types and changing the types of guys we are drawn to is the beginning of creating happier relationships. And, according to Angeline, happy relationships are the beginning of happier lives and who doesn’t want a happier life!
