Relax More, Stress Less!

More heart attacks happen on Monday morning than any other time of the week. Stress is an epidemic. Yet at the same time, it is often a ‘badge of honor’. We brag and boast about how stressed we are. And, we feel guilty if we have time to relax. Nicky Stansbury, international stress management life coach and owner of La Palmera Spa, says we have it all wrong. We need to relax more and stress less!

What is relaxation, really? It is defined as relief from bodily or mental work, effort, application, etc. If you think about it, it is the opposite of stress. Stress is derived from bodily and mental work. Consider this, worrying, rushing and overthinking are also forms of mental work.

Relaxation is more than a vacation or a spa day (although indulging in those are great). Don’t get me wrong, those are great forms of relaxation; but we need to make relaxation a part of our daily lives and you just don’t vacation or take a spa day daily.

So, what do you regularly do to as a relief from bodily or mental work? I soak in a tub several times a week. I curl up on the sofa with a blanket and read. Sometimes I spend an afternoon hiking or with my Nikon camera taking photos. A long walk with my dog or just snuggling with him watching a favorite TV show counts as relaxation.

Meditation, yoga, dinner with friends, massage, a night on the town, breathing exercises … all of these are great ways to disengage from stress and relax and reengage with yourself.

Find several ways to relax and have them at your disposal. It doesn’t take a day, half day or even an hour. It could be as little as 15 minutes.
