Shhhhh! It’s a secret. Actually, YOU’RE a secret! Career coach, Tana Session says there is a good chance that you are your own best-kept secret. We learn from a young age not to toot our own horns. In fact, often time on the job and at home, we wait, in silence, for others to recognize our awesomeness. Sadly, we often end up frustrated and angry when our excellence isn’t acknowledged. It’s time to change that
Maybe this isn’t true for younger (under 40 women) but those of us who’ve crossed this threshold were probably told as little girls not to brag about our accomplishments or toot our own horns. Others would recognize how great we were. They would see the quality of our work. They would recognize our work ethic and hard work.
Even as a little girl, I didn’t get this. Who better than me to showcase my fabulous. I mean, I was the ringleader of my own 3-ring circus. But I reluctantly did what I was told. I wonder how different life could be if I had never piped down.
How much money could I be making? How many promotions could I have received? How different could my life be if I had stopped being my own best kept secret and started being my own loud, energetic cheerleader?
I don’t have a daughter, but if I did, I would encourage her to be proud of her accomplishments. Brag a little. Be proud of what you have done. Believe it or not, you can do this without arrogance or being full of yourself.
Be you. Be proud of you. Let everyone know the awesomeness of you!
